Lewis, salvation was not a "once-for-all" event in the life of a believer at which "one gets saved."

Since many evangelicals don't promulgate this view of salvation, especially the ones influenced by the Reformation, repeating this truth about Lewis doesn't add any support to the thesis that his churchmanship was higher than previously supposed.

As far as purgatory goes, one fundamentalist crank a few years back wrote an article titled "Did C.S. Lewis Go To Heaven?" where he unchurched Lewis for his belief in purgatory:

http://www.trinityfoundation.org/journal.php?id=103

I hate this stuff just as much as anybody else; it's sad and pathetically bad. But it doesn't represent mainstream Evangelicalism any more than T.S. Eliot represents High Churchmanship. This guy isn't even a member of any communion or church.

Many thanks, Father. Of course he and Tolkien had a falling out because the latter thought the Narnia books were a bad, preachy ripoff of the Lord of the Rings.

Lewis while at Oxford belonged to, IIRC, St Michael's in Headington, one of the city's many Anglo-Catholic churches at the time, not because he liked the churchmanship but out of humility/obedience because it was his geographical parish. (Which was doable back then because most parishes were at least still conservatively Christian.)
